With VLC, you can watch almost any type of media file. Sometimes, when you watch video, you want subtitles, especially when you watch a foreign film or watch a video in a loud area and want to follow the dialogue. The default set up for VLC is to not have the subtitles playing, but it can play embedded subtitles in DVD, SVCD, OGM files, and MKV files. If you want to enable the subtitles, simply follow these steps.
Step 1:
Open your VLC player and click on the media file you wish to play. Then, look for the Video menu. Click on the Video menu, which will lead to a drop down menu.
Step 2:
From the drop down Video menu, hover on the Subtitles track. It will list the available subtitle tracks, which may include different languages or other options.
Step 3:
Choose the subtitle option you want for the video by clicking on it. In some video formats, namely OGM and MKV, you can make changes to the style of the subtitles, since they are rendered text. You can change these options in the Preferences file in the Tools tab. Check the all bullet in the Show Setting Box and click on the Subtitles and OSD button. This allows you to choose a font file.
Recap:
To enable subtitles on your VLC, simply click on the Subtitles track option under the Video menu. You disable subtitles the same way. It is easy to go back and forth depending on whether you need subtitles at a particular moment.

It is common that while watching a video or a movie you will need them. Subtitles make it easy for the viewers to understand what’s said in the video. Most common example of this is in the case of movies. Sometimes, the accent of the people in the videos is really strange and makes it ambiguous for the viewers to figure out as to what is being said by the subject. Often people of some other nation download subtitles in their native languages and are able watch foreign movies. These subtitles are available in different languages and hence they provide videos a universal appeal. Nowadays, subtitles are also used in many different theatres for making it easy for audiences to understand. These subtitles usually come in SRT files.
Most of the time at least one SRT file is given along with the video file and sometimes you need to download it from the internet. These SRT files have been serving people well all over the world. If you have a SRT file and don’t know how to use it in the video, follow the below mentioned steps.
- ■Click on the VLC Player icon to open the program.
■Select Media menu.
■Click the option Open File.
■Search a video file having a SRT file.
■Select the video file and click Open.
■Click Video in menu bar of VLC Player.
■Go to Subtitles Track option available in the drop-down list of Video menu.
■A sub-menu will appear wherein you have to click Open File option.
■Now a window will open up. Browse and locate the SRT file and select it.
■After you have selected the SRT file, click OK.
Now, the subtitles will begin to play. There’s an alternate method of using SRT files while playing the video, and that is by dragging the SRT file in VLC Player window while the video is playing. Now you can sit back and relax. You can read the subtitles and can understand what is conveyed by the subject in the video. There are several sites from where you can download these SRT files. However before you do so, make sure that the site you choose for downloading subtitles is an authentic one.
Part 1: How to Sync/Adjust Subtitles Delay in VLC
There are generally 2 ways to adjust/sync VLC subtitle delay on Windows or Mac. Let's get started with how to fixed subtitles that are not synchronized with movie or video using the player. See how to sync audio with video in VLC >>
[Solution 1]:
1. Open the VLC, click on Tools > Track Synchronization. Here You'll find the Subtitles/Video section after hitting on the Synchronization tab.
1. Open the VLC, click on Tools > Track Synchronization. Here You'll find the Subtitles/Video section after hitting on the Synchronization tab.
2. Now just sync subtitles in VLC with the video. If you are watching a movie with the subs showing 3 seconds after the scene, it means the subtitles display 3 seconds behind the movie. All you have to do is to put a negative value -3.000 s in Advance of subtitles over video. On the contrary, if the subtitles are appearing 3 seconds before the video, you can input a positive value 3.000 s here, as it indicates the subs are leading ahead the file by 3 seconds.
Note:
You shall be aware of the extract number of seconds they lag behind or lead ahead. And adjustment of tenths does the job in most cases, despite you can adjust the sync time up to a thousandth of a second.

There is another easier way to fix the delayed subtitles in VLC easily, by taking advantages of keyboard shortcuts H and G, to adjust subtitle delay during playback.
There is another easier way to fix the delayed subtitles in VLC easily, by taking advantages of keyboard shortcuts H and G, to adjust subtitle delay during playback.
1. To delay a subtitle: Press G on your keyboard if the subtitle is ahead of the sound. You can delay a subtitle by 50 ms (millisecond) each. So if you want to slow the subtitle down by 0.5 seconds, hit G ten times.
2. To speed up a subtitle: Use the key H to speed up the subtitle by 50 ms for every click. Press repeatedly or long press to advance the subtitle according to your needs.
2. To speed up a subtitle: Use the key H to speed up the subtitle by 50 ms for every click. Press repeatedly or long press to advance the subtitle according to your needs.
Note: Generally, the subtitles sync well with the movie. But in rare cases, you run up against the VLC subtitle delay issue. If the subtitles perfect sync with the video in the beginning but go out-of-sync gradually or wrap up faster or slower than the video, the Speed of the subtitles option will be helpful. You can adjust the fps (frames per second) value to increase or decrease the subtitle appearing speed. For instance, for fast subtitles, decrease the fps value to keep pace with the video.

Hi,
Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community. Your interest in Windows 10 is much appreciated.
You have to play the video file in Video app. Then while you watch the video, you have to right click on the video to get “Playback Option”.
Note: You will get subtitles only if the video has it.
I hope this answered your question. If you have any other issues with Windows, please do post it in Microsoft Community. We would be happy to help you.
Thank you

I think he meant playing subtitles with video files in the new Movie & TV app for windows 10. There is no right click function for a playback option but in windows 8.1 there was. This is something I'm concerned about as well, my wife is not an English speaker so all our movies need subtitles. Is there a solution for this? 426 people were helped by this reply

To clarify the scenario, I think most users would have a separate mkv (or other) video file and a matching 'srt' subtitle file. The bug is that neither the old Windows Media Player or the new Videos app is picking up the subtitle files on Windows 10. (The subtitle file should have the same name as the video file, except for the extension, of course). This has worked in all previous versions of Windows and media players. I tried it with mkv files only so far, not sure about the other formats.
Tip until Microsoft fixes the bug: install media player classic (bing MPC-HC), that one works as expected.

Rakesh. There is not a 'Video' app, there is a Movies & TV, as samblaze says. And Right clicking it does not show anything.
Mic414, in my case there is no .srt, the subtitles are into the .mkv file. Some of them show just fine, other do not.

I 'Solved' it using Media Player Classic. I mean, it's not a real solution, I like the new video app, but it's discouraging when it doesn't read the subtitles of half of the videos well.

Thanks for the solution chrispale. It worked for me (Windows Media Player 12).
In order to work please note that you need external .mkv codecs. I used XP-codec pack and installed only 'Matroska' codecs.
